Last September, Ford broke the Internet with the introduction and global unveiling of the all-new seventh-generation S650 Mustang. The previous sixth-generation model, the S550 Mustang, was introduced in 2014 (as a 2015 model year). It has literally owned the pony car wars, with more than 500,000 units sold between 2015 and 2020. Over the years, we’ve seen several Mustang models that continued to up the ante in performance and handling.
The S550 could be ordered in any of the following trim levels:
The seventh generation 2024 Ford Mustang brings new looks, trim levels, performance, and technology to the celebrated nameplate — Ford went back to the drawing board for the 2024 Mustang family. For the return model year, the car may be ordered in any of the following trim levels:
The all-new Mustang offers a traditional 6-speed manual or a (faster) slick-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission. When looking closer at the various trim levels, there are two engine options; the 2.3L EcoBoost 4-cylinder or the tried-and-true 5.0L ‘Coyote’ V8. In addition, each new Mustang trim level is packed with new features and value to elevate the Mustang to the top of the Pony Car class. For example, all 2024 Mustangs now feature DUAL 12” fully digital dash display screens that can be configured in various ways depending on the driver’s preference. Drivers may even go as far as to configure the dash gauges to mimic that of an iconic 1980s Fox Body Mustang. Ford Motor Company has stated that this seventh-generation Mustang was designed to be ‘tech-centric.’
The 2024 Mustang EcoBoost’s 2.3-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder is redesigned to have better packaging under the hood, a new fuel and ignition system, a higher compression ratio, and a new turbo, all while producing better fuel economy and performance. The 2024 EcoBoost makes 330 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque. Sadly, the EcoBoost Mustang may only be had with Ford’s 10-speed automatic – sorry manual fans.
The new fourth generation ‘Coyote’ 5.0-liter V8 receives several updates. The revised platform receives dual throttle bodies with dual air intakes for better airflow and performance. A new steel oil pan and exhaust manifold design also contribute to what will be Ford’s most potent and efficient 5.0-liter V8 ever. The 2024 Mustang GT produces 480 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft of torque when paired with the optional active exhaust. In addition, the flagship Dark Horse trim level sees several more changes, including a new crankshaft, forged connecting rods, and a beefier camshaft resulting in a category-shattering 500 horsepower and 418 lb.-ft of torque.
When looking at the exterior of the new Ford Mustang, the car sports a more aggressive and chiseled aesthetic vs. the previous S550. Full LED headlights and taillights help highlight the wider track and shorter rear overhang than previous generations. In addition, the 2024 Mustang sees the return of several popular paint colors and a couple of new and trim-level exclusive colors. The entire catalog of colors is as follows:
Ford offers optional vinyl or hand-painted stripes to customize your 2024 Mustang further. There are also a whole series of interior color options to accent the standard comfort seats or optional heavy-bolstered RECARO sport seats.
The range-topping 2024 Mustang Dark Horse is Ford’s first new performance model in the last two decades. The 500-hp pony car was strategically engineered to dominate in a track atmosphere. Specific attention to the car’s performance, cooling, and handling has led to a track-ready Mustang that doesn’t sacrifice the refinement and classic nature of the iconic nameplate. The Dark Horse wears a unique front facia, a taller rear spoiler that receives a gurney flap (if the owner opts for the ‘Handling Package’) for additional downforce, massive 6-piston Brembo brakes, and more. Prospective owners can also opt for carbon fiber wheels developed by Carbon Revolution that weigh in at a mere 20.1 lb each –a 37% weight reduction over the standard wheels. The optional carbon fiber Dark Horse wheels are wrapped in Pirelli Trofeo RS tires with 305/30R-19 up front and 315/30R-19 in the rear.
