Is the 2025 RAM RHO a better Ford Raptor alternative?
RAM’s legendary TRX was introduced to the world in 2020. Its sole purpose was to be the most powerful and off-road capable performance pickup truck the industry had ever seen. Around this time, the Ford Raptor was preparing to enter its third generation. With the RAM offering 702 horsepower from its HEMI 6.2-liter supercharged V8, the Raptor’s standard 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 was instantly outgunned. For the next three years, the RAM TRX would dominate the performance truck and SUV and win performance enthusiasts’ hearts with its unmatched power.
Production of the HEMI-powered RAM TRX ended abruptly in December of 2023, but not before its replacement was unveiled to the industry. Most would say that RAM’s latest ploy in this performance truck war is an interesting one. Instead of chasing even more power, RAM has replaced the TRX with a new version – the RHO. The 2025 RAM RHO is no longer powered by a HEMI, but rather a high-output version of the Stellantis three-liter twin-turbo inline-six, code-named the Hurricane. This is the same engine that has replaced the 5.7L HEMI and 6.4L HEMI in the RAM 1500 and Jeep Grand Wagoneer. RAM calls the RHO a new truck, but powertrain aside, the RHO is essentially a reskinned TRX with a few more bells and whistles.
Don’t jump the gun, we don’t say this to bash the RHO. Rather, we share this as positive news. The TRX has proven itself to be a formidable off-roader and has one of the best interiors in the game.
When comparing options in the market, the new RAM RHO now goes head-to-head with Ford’s Raptor with the 3.5L V6. Looking at these two trucks, Ram has Ford’s pricing beat by a landslide. At its base price of $78,440, the Raptor offers only 450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. The RH) on the other hand starts at $69,995 and produces 540 horsepower and 521 lb-ft of torque. Both trucks offer similar quirks and features such as tech-loaded interiors, adaptable off-road suspension, and more.
In closing, what does the 2025 RAM RHO mean for the super truck war? The truck doesn’t do anything to revolutionize off-road capability and holds many of the same dynamics as its predecessor. However, the compelling price of the RHO may be most vital in winning the votes of customers compared to the Raptor. If the RHO meets all expectations and enthusiasts can swallow the loss of the TRX’s V8, the RHO could force another shift in the ever-changing performance truck market.
